A very talented musician, arranger, and composer, Michael Duff wrote the music for Phantom of the Country Opera, (lyrics – Cheri Coons, book – Sean Grenan and Kathy Santen) presented at the Marriott’s Lincolnshire Theater, nominated for the Joseph Jefferson Award for Best New Work, and published by Music Theatre International. This same team presented a new project, Rodeo, selected for a second workshop where the authors worked with Stephen Schwartrz to continue development. Mr. Duff also wrote the music for At Wit’s End, (book and lyrics by Cheri Coons) presented at Florida Stage, receiving a Carbonell Award for Best New Work and a second production at the Northlight Theatre in Chicago. Listed in Who’s Who In Entertainment, Mr. Duff was Musical Director in the U.S. for the national tours of West Side Story, CATS, Les Miserables,Nunsense with the late Dody Goodman,Starlight Express, 42nd Street, and Bob Fosse’s Dancin’.
Internationally he has directed the music for 42nd Street in Moscow, The Sound of Music and The King and I in Asia, and most recently, Cinderalla on an Asian tour, starring Lea Salonga. Mr. Duff has been a guest conductor of the Grant Park Orchestra in Chicago, and performed on Broadway in The News. From 1981-88 he was Musical Director for the Burt Reynolds Jupiter Theatre, and from 1991 – 96 was Resident Musical Director of Marriott’s Lincolnshire Theater in Chicago, where he and his wife Priscilla have a home. They have three children and two grandchildren.
The Midwest Harp Festival boasts of having performed Mr. Duff’s arrangement of Ravel’s Valley of the Bellsfor 3 harps two years ago. This year, Mr. Duff will conduct all attending harps in ensemble, his arrangement of Charles Ive’s Variations on America.
